Road to the Whitehouse variants and candidates submitted by Geenius

General Election -- Simplified Rules

Vice presidential candidates do not come into play. Votes and bonuses are still doubled for Democratic and Republican candidates. Surrogate turns are not doubled, but the votes gathered by surrogates are. The cost to make another player lose his turn is Mega$8. Only one aspect of a minor-party candidate (charisma bonus, surrogate turns, money, setup organizations and votes, issue effects) is doubled. Issues are raised and revived as in the standard general election rules.

General Election -- "Walls of Jericho" Variant

All aspects of a minor-party candidate are doubled, as for the Democratic and Republican candidates. However, each minor-party candidate must spend character creation points just to get on the ballot. For each state the candidate will be eligible to run in, the player must spend points equal to the number of electoral votes in that state. Thus, a minor-party candidate on the ballot in all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia, has only 662 points left to spend on other aspects of his character. This reflects the amount of effort that must be diverted away from presenting himself to the voters.

New Candidates

SECRETARY KEN DIEHL
A quiet, statesmanly figure on a first-name basis with about two dozen foreign leaders, Diehl is making a typically understated bid for the White House. A master speechmaker and canny media player, he has admirers throughout Washington, and his bid is backed up by years of top-flight foreign policy experience. His lack of a solid domestic policy has raised some concern, however.

KARL OSTENWALDER
Movie hero Karl Ostenwalder, the son of Swiss immigrants, has built his reputation -- and his tremendous popularity -- on his tough-guy image, and he is using that reputation to take his career in a new direction. His platform is thin, but he plays his part so well that most people don't seem to notice. His trademark line, "Go ahead and try it," has turned into his unofficial campaign slogan.

REP. JOHN SCHAFER
The Rev. John Schafer, after being elected to Congress twice by his constituents in Cincinnati, is taking his crusade on the presidential campaign trail. His platform, derided by many as a "welfare state under God," appeals to many family-oriented conservatives who want to avoid the appearance of heartlessness, and he has many followers among religiously affiliated charity and service groups. Most voters, however, are a little nervous about how much church he would bring into the state.
